Parahyangan Catholic University’s Accounting Study Program won a Competition Grant (Hibah Kompetisi) in the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Kampus Merdeka Competition Program in 2021. With regard to the achievement of this competition grant, Parahyangan Catholic University’s Accounting Study Program organized a series of activities, one of which was the debriefing and mentoring of the Accounting Competition Team by inviting accounting alumni and practitioners to deliver the materials for around 35 students of the Accounting Competition Team selected from the classes of 2018 and 2019.
The students gained a variety of knowledge experiences with current topics relevant to the competition and the future of the competition team in the workplace. On Tuesday, August 3, 2021, an online briefing was held by inviting Ms. Velda Fidelia. She has very deep working experience in the hospitality field. She has been in the hospitality industry for more than 12 years. She started as an Assistant Manager Credit at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta. After that, she worked at several other major hotels, such as the Trans Luxury Hotel Bandung and the InterContinental Bandung. Currently, she serves as Director of Finance and Room Division Manager at the Mercure Bandung City Center Hotel.
On this occasion, Ms. Velda presented the theme of “How to Manage Financial and Work Opportunity at Chain Hotel” as a briefing for the Accounting competition team, who may be interested in working in the hospitality industry. Tourism in Indonesia is growing very rapidly, and the number of tourists coming to Indonesia continues to grow from year to year, so the hospitality sector is in great demand today. Hotels themselves consist of several categories, namely local and international chains.
The advantage of working for an International Hotel Chain is that there are many training opportunities provided, both locally and internationally. Furthermore, we can get global networking, especially from the Asia-Pacific region, which will allow us to work anywhere and have the opportunity to travel with lower accommodation costs. In addition to these benefits, there is also the financial benefit of a service charge. To enter the world of hospitality, Ms. Velda also conveyed some tips and tricks that are important to know, such as having to be business-oriented, treating coworkers and guests well, teamwork, increasing practice, improving English language skills, and often asking questions as well as doing research.
Furthermore, she discussed the organizational structure and job description of each part of the finance and accounting department, the key components of hotel success such as customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction, and the key components of hotel financial success such as profit and loss and cash flow.
